As Brams accepted congratulations from the front office contingent who accompanied him to Exton from Newark, he hinted that running back LaDainian Tomlinson would be the Cherries' pick. "Of the guys we're looking at, Tomlinson offers the most upside. With the relatively high number of decent quarterbacks, we can probably wait for the second round to get one," he said.
In a lottery in which eight of the twelve picks were decided by tiebreakers, most of the Cherries' Central Division rivals did well. The New York Empires and Philadelphia Lakers competed in a three-way tiebreaker for the fourth pick. The Empires ended up with pick number five while the Lakers fell to the sixth position. The Atlantic City Seagulls got the 10th pick by drawing second best in another three-way tiebreaker for the ninth slot.
The booby prize 12th position went to the Cherries' van mates — the Baltimore Bolts. No doubt Brams and company ribbed the Bolts contingent on the return trip to Newark while also savoring their good fortune and salivating over LaDainian Tomlinson.
